Homeopathy heals – physically, mentally and spiritually
Homeopathy is an alternative form of medicine which approaches the patient as a whole as opposed to treating individual conditions one by one. During a homeopathic consultation you will be studied physically, mentally and also spiritually. Your totality of symptoms will inspire an overall diagnosis which will then determine the remedy. This will either be taken over a few doses or in one single dose.
The medical practice of Homeopathy administers extremely dilute amounts of certain natural substances to treat various ailments. It is based on the theory by Samuel Hahnemann, a respected German doctor from the 1800’s, that “like cures like”.
Symptoms are a body’s way of taking action to overcome a problem.
This is an automatic reaction which we call the ‘vital response’. A similar medicine will act as a stimulus in order to give the vital response the information it needs to complete its healing process.
First the symptoms are increased by the medicine and the vital response which proves that it is having the desired effect. Healing is taking place. The disease is being dealt with and cured as it is pushed out in the form of symptoms.
The medicines are studied by being given to healthy people and analysing their reactions – this information provides the information behind the “like cures like” theory. The medicine’s unique symptom depiction must match the individual’s unique expression of the disease.
The administration of medicine is limited to a minimum dose which is only given in order to stimulate the healing process from within. A huge positive of this method of treatment is that there are no gross side effects, the remedies are powerful yet subtle and gentle on the body being at minimal doses.
Homeopathy also has a huge following due to its natural methods, utilising the body’s own healing power in order to treat a problem. The patient is always treated as unique, not seen as a pot of common potential diseases or illnesses but an individual as a whole. Therefore your entirety is treated rather than singular isolated issues and you are treated at all your levels of being; emotional, mental, physical, spiritual.
There are scientifically sceptical viewpoints on the physics behind homeopathic medicines and some studies have negated their effectivity. However, one fact remains, besides the opposing scientific studies out to falsify the effectivity of Homeopathy; it works!
I have read endless statements claiming Hoemopathic methods have helped or cured abdominal pains, Erb’s Palsy, gastric ulcers, migraines, allergies, Chron’s disease, night terrors, endometriosis, corns, colic, post-natal depression, menstrual cramps, tonsillitis, hay fever, skin conditions, glandular fever, flu, and SO much more.
The following are three case studies published by the British Homeopathic Association (est. 1902).
Drew, 14, eczema
Drew’s eczema started around the age of one, just small patches in the normal presentation, on the insides of his elbows. These never went away and then gradually the eczema spread down his forearms to his hands, which were very bad by the time he was two and a half. His mother took him to their GP who prescribed steroid cream and wraps which did not help.
Chinese herbalists were seen in hope of finding a cure and one treatment did rid Drew of eczema for a few years. However, the eczema returned with a vengeance aged 11 on his hands, spreading up his arms to his chest, neck and face, also on his tummy and legs.
The GP offered even stronger steroid cream, which they did not want to use on his skin. His mother requested a referral to the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital (RLHH) and Drew began treatment in January 2008.
Drew saw Dr Sara Eames, a former GP who has also trained in homeopathy and after only three appointments, there was a massive improvement. Drew’s eczema had cleared from his face, chest, tummy, neck and arms. He still had some on his hands, but the homeopathic medicine and cream were really helping him.
“I feel so lucky we were able to get a referral from our GP to the homeopathic doctor. The treatment really does seem to be helping Drew’s eczema and I feel reassured that there are no side-effects and there will be no long-term damage to his skin”.
Drew is much happier. He said, “I like having the Homoeopathic medication because its natural and since taking it it has made me feel better on the inside as well as the outside. I would describe it as feeling fresh inside. My skin is not as dry and doesn’t feel tight anymore. The eczema has totally cleared from my chest and stomach area and improved from other places”.
Lauren, 26, Rheumatoid Arthritis
“I was diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis (JRA) when I was two years old which initially affected my knees and ankles. At the time the only treatment available was large quantities of steroids, but my parents didn’t want me to be on these drugs at such a young age, which was fortunate for the long-term effects of treating such young children with high doses of steroids were later found to do more harm than good. Looking for other options my parents decided to try homeopathy.”
“When I was 17 I had a huge arthritic flare-up. In my right eye I had Uveitis, an inflammation of the middle layer of the eye, a condition most children with JRA get at a young age. A cataract was forming rapidly but they couldn’t remove it as in normal cases, as there was too much inflammation in the eye.”
“The cataract was growing more layers and getting dangerous, so I had to take a conventional medication for a short period of time in order to have the operation. I was prescribed a chemo-based drug which I shall call “M”. After a few months this drug made me so ill I couldn’t function any more.”
“The arthritis started to spread – it was only in five joints for the first 18 years of my life. By the time I’d been taking “M” for a year, the arthritis had spread to every joint in my body – hips, fingers, jaw, neck, elbows, everywhere. I also lost half my hair and it damaged my liver. I was also wheelchair bound, so I swore never to take a conventional medication again.”
“I started seeing a homeopath when I was just four years old and it has kept me strong for so many years. During my childhood I attended group hydrotherapy sessions and always had more energy than the other children who were being slowed down by steroids. I was still not like most normal children and my arthritis affected me, but homeopathy kept my body strong and able to fight illnesses.
Homeopathic medicine is now the only medication I take. I attend the RLHIM every two months where I see a number of doctors including Dr Peter Fisher. I’m prescribed various medicines depending on what is going on with me at the time, but I do find Pulsatilla very helpful. This is why I love homeopathy: it treats the person not the disease.”
“I believe that the only reason I live a normal life is because of homeopathy. Most people who have had arthritis for 24 years have many deformities, and other secondary illnesses due to all the medications they have taken over the years. I am proud to say that I am strong, have great general health and a good immune system and I look like a normal 26 year old. I’m convinced this is only because I have been using homeopathy from a very young age. If I’d spent my childhood taking conventional medicine, I’m sure I wouldn’t be as healthy as I am now.”
My rheumatologist, who is not a homeopath, says my bone density should be much worse than it is after 24 years of arthritis. But as I live a more active life than most people who have this illness, he agrees I should carry on doing what I’m doing.”
“Complementary medicine is now an important part of my life. The wonderful thing about the RLHIM is that it offers a whole range of integrated therapies. I see Dr Tariq Khan for podiatry and I use his excellent Marigold treatment which corrected the slight deformities that were starting to appear in my toes. I see Dr Raj Sharma for hypnotherapy and CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy). I have Craniosacral therapy with Dr Weissner and I’m now also being seen in the insomnia clinic to help with my sleep problems. I also meditate as I believe I need to keep mind clear and strong in order to stay healthy.”
“I know there are studies that suggest there is a link between food allergies and rheumatoid arthritis and some sufferers avoid certain foods, but I don’t. When my illness was very bad I cut out wheat, dairy and sugar, as well as some vegetables and fruits that are supposed to be bad for arthritis. However, I now believe that moderation is the best approach. You shouldn’t deprive your body of what it wants but you should limit everything. I don’t eat lots of bread, maybe once or twice a week, but I don’t cut it out. I have lactose free milk instead of full dairy milk. I eat a lot of fresh vegetables and not too much red meat, but like I said – a little of everything. I try to eat lots of fish and I make sure I drink plenty of water and herbal teas, such as fennel tea as it is good for cleansing.”
“In April last year I published my autobiography “My Enemy, My Friend”, which tells the story of my life with arthritis: the low points I have reached; the trouble I’ve had with the hospital system; but how, ultimately, I came through it with the help of integrated medicine and a strong family.” – Lauren
Jackie, thyroid and adrenals
“Around 11 years ago I became extremely ill, losing a stone in weight for no apparent reason. My metabolism was so fast and my appetite couldn’t be satisfied. I felt fatigued; I had lost muscle tone and was having no sleep along with many other frightening symptoms. I had a strong sense that my thyroid was the root cause, but obviously couldn’t assume this so I went to see my GP. I had blood tests and the results came back as borderline hyperactive thyroid. My GP told me to come back in a month’s time for another blood test to see if it had changed.”
“I felt so ill as the symptoms were progressing – feeling it was not taken seriously. So I saw another GP who said it was classic textbook symptoms and referred me to an endocrinologist with an appointment in three months time. In the meantime the GP was told by the endocrinologist to put me on Carbimazol (basically to slow down my thyroid – with the possible side-effects of knocking out my immune system).”
“After eight days on this drug, I felt like I was almost comatose and could hardly get out of bed. I took myself off it without referring back to the GP as I was so frightened, and my gut feeling was this was not being treated correctly.”
“Fortunately at this point I was recommended to a Homeopathic doctor who had successfully treated a friend and had much experience of many patients with thyroid problems. So he started to treat my thyroid, (also just to be completely sure – I also found and saw privately a GP who specialised in thyroid/adrenal problems.) He supported complementary medicine and suggested asking my homeopathic practitioner to treat my adrenals as well as my thyroid.”
“(In laypersons terms) his diagnosis was that my adrenals were exhausted and putting more pressure on my thyroid to work harder – hence it appeared overactivity of the thyroid. He listened carefully to what I told him about my symptoms, saying he would never just trust a blood test alone, but the symptoms are vital – to give him the answers. He was also very supportive and caring.”
“Working alongside my homeopathic doctor who did as was suggested, I gradually got better. It took over a year, as my elderly mother was during this time diagnosed with cancer and I had to support and help her as well, which delayed my recovery a little. I became fully recovered without the aid of drugs – just various homeopathic remedies and good nutrition.
“If I hadn’t taken myself off the Carbimazol, I dare not think what state I could have ended up in. I would most probably have been on Thyroxine for the rest of my life. I’ve also recently had major dental surgery (implants) and have taken recommended homeopathic medicines before and after surgery. I was in a very calm and reasonably relaxed state beforehand and the healing has been much quicker than some cases where I’ve heard it has taken people two weeks to get over the bruising and shock.”
“I hope this will be helpful in support of the fight to keep homeopathy available on the NHS.” – Jackie.
Homeopathy has certainly made some big waves in the world of traditional medicine, being opposed at every turn. Anything that threatens big business always suffers this level of scrutiny and so it is understandable. One ex GP and now Homeopathic doctor looks at it reflectively, “Homeopaths have shown that homeopathy works. Millions of patients have experienced these deep cures, it is now the duty of the ‘science’, (the physicist and bio-chemist and cellular biologist, immunologist and geneticist) to show ‘how’ it works. Homeopaths have done their part”.
The fact remains that millions of people swear by it, it has worked for a huge range of ailments and diseases where traditional medicines haven’t. It is natural and a wholesome way to approach a person’s health as unique and look at each individual as an entity rather than isolated sicknesses.
